What is Gestational Diabetes anyway?

So, I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes last week. I went to 'class' on Tuesday and picked-up my new constant companion, my glucose testing kit. Here's what I'm learning about GD - Doctor's aren't certain about what causes it. They do know that hormones from the placenta block the action of insulin in the mother's body, causing insulin resistance. Without enough insulin, glucose cannot leave the blood and be changed into energy. This causes glucose to build up in the bloodstream.

Right now, they're monitoring my blood sugar levels (sticking myself 4 times per day - YUCK!) and making me watch my diet. Some of you may remember that Luke is sitting pretty low, causing me pain and one-day of spotting. The doctor said I might experience more. They're going to monitor me more closely now. I'll probably have Non-Stress Tests and possibly another ultrasound if they think Luke is getting too big. I probably won't go past the 38-week mark before they induce, just to ensure that he doesn't get too big.

Gestational diabetes can cause high weight babies and that raises the possibility of having a c-section. It can also cause low-sugar and raise the risk of breathing problems in the baby. I want to avoid all of that if possible.

Right now, I'm feeling incredibly exhausted!

I still need to paint Luke's closet, buy a door for the closet, along with replacing the baseboards in his room. I have my "Preparing for Parenthood" class on Saturday and a baby shower on Sunday given by my Miss Alabama friends. Mom's coming to class with me and will stay that night. Pam and Julia are coming to the shower on Sunday. I can't wait!
