Okay, I'm not going to get too upset (ha! ha!) about the responses I've gotten anonymously from my previous post. I spend hundreds of hours a year as a VOLUNTEER within the Miss Alabama system. As such, I feel like I'm entitled to an OPINION (as the title of this blog clearly states) concerning the system. No where in my post concerning the outcome of Miss Alabama nor in my commented reply did I question Miss Tapley's win as Miss Alabama 2009.
I merely stated that I would've chosen differently from a BUSINESS standpoint. Obviously, this year's judges chose someone intelligent, talented and well-spoken in a closed-group setting. That's the only venue they've seen any of the contestants and where they're all called-upon to win the competition. In recent years, the young woman with the highest points in individual portions did not win the overall pageant (Overall talent, interview, etc.). This year, she did. Congratulations! Bravo! No where did I question Miss Tapley's fitness for the title of Miss Alabama; I questioned her understanding of the JOB of Miss Alabama.
Now, those who know me - and its quite obvious by your remarks that you don't - know that I am fully dedicated to supporting Miss Tapley during her year of service; as I do whomever is chosen as Miss Alabama. I wish her the best of luck this year.
As for me, I'm busy preparing for my upcoming preliminary pageants and supporting those young women who choose to compete in the Miss Alabama program! You see, I spend countless hours preparing current event questions, mentoring these beautiful young women, working on their chosen community service issues, raising scholarship and prize donations, securing donations, writing scripts, putting together information packets, fielding questions at all hours of the day and night from anxious contestants and their parents, attending planning sessions and meetings, along with GROWING A PERSON, working full-time in a demanding position, enjoying time with friends and family, actively participating in church and maintaining hobbies like reading and watching Double-A baseball games (GO BARONS!).
So, for those who choose to critique my OPINION, I invite you to write me directly and we can discuss it. If you choose to hide behind the anonymity of a post, so be it. Its your conscious that you have to live with.
